Tibet is a high altitude plateau set amid tall mountain ranges. The mountain ranges catch the rainfall before it reaches the plateau, so most of Tibet, except for the southeast, is desert steppe, tundra, or permafrost. Most of Tibet experiences frost at least six months of the year, and the highest lakes have ice from October to March. The weather varies a lot from region to region.

Weather: In December, temperatures drop well below freezing in most of Tibet at night. During the day, it may feel nicely cool in Lhasa and even at such high places as Yamdrok Lake. It is dry and sunny.

Lhasa is where most tourists arrive, and it is also one of the lowest valleys that most tourists see. The average nightly low is -9 °C (15 °F), and the average daily high is 8 °C (45 °F). Clothing: For the temperature extremes as you travel and the nightly temperature drop, dress in layers with a coat, trousers, and a T-shirt. Though the UV radiation is relatively moderate, you can wear a sun hat and sunglasses for comfort. You might need a coat inside many hotels and restaurants because many don't have central heating. Take a heavier coat and gloves up to higher areas.

Altitude Sickness: Oxygen levels are much lower in Tibet. Cardiovascular conditions are exacerbated, and most people get altitude sickness. Seek health advice before going, and acclimate appropriately before exertion or going higher than Lhasa.
